Model 500, a groundbreaking electronic music project led by the Detroit godfather of techno Juan Atkins, has shaped the global dance music landscape for over a decade. Beginning with the 1985 classic No UFO’s and culminating in the 1995 album Deep Space, this alias became synonymous with Detroit techno innovation and remains a cornerstone of electronic music history.

In 1985, Atkins released No UFO’s on his label Metroplex, marking the start of a revolutionary sound that resonated globally. Like Ford’s Model T, these new machine rhythms transformed electronic music, particularly in Europe, where dance music flourished as a cultural phenomenon. Over the years, Atkins established himself as a pioneer, creating tracks that continue to inspire artists and producers worldwide.

With his unique ability to make machines “speak” and create soulful beats, Atkins has influenced a legion of artists, from avant-garde rock bands like Radiohead to futuristic R&B producers such as Timberland and The Neptunes. His innovative techniques and timeless tracks, including Clear and No UFO’s, remain staples on dance floors and playlists across the globe.

In 2007, Model 500 evolved into a live band. Joined by DJ Skurge and longtime collaborator Mark Taylor, Atkins transformed the project into a dynamic performance act. They debuted as a band at the Detroit Electronic Music Festival and quickly expanded to festivals in Europe, Asia, and Australia. This era brought a new energy to Model 500, merging classic Detroit techno with live instrumentation and fresh perspectives.

Their 2015 album Digital Solutions, released on the iconic R&S Records, solidified their legacy. The album marked a return to form, blending futuristic sounds with the soulful rhythms that defined their earlier works. With three studio albums and numerous singles, Model 500 continues to stand as a testament to Juan Atkins’ vision and influence.

Today, Model 500 remains at the forefront of electronic music, bridging the gap between the genre’s pioneering roots and its ever-evolving future. Whether through live performances or classic tracks, the project continues to inspire new generations of artists and fans, proving that Atkins’ innovative spirit is as relevant as ever.
